Plantar Fasciitis

plantar fasciitis

Overview

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It happens when the band of tissue along the bottom of your foot (the plantar fascia) becomes irritated or strained. This tissue supports your arch and helps absorb shock with every step. When inflamed, it can cause sharp, stabbing pain, especially first thing in the morning or after long periods of rest.

Plantar fasciitis is often linked to repetitive stress and strain. Common causes include:

  • Flat feet (pes planus) or high arches (pes cavus)
  • Limited ankle mobility
  • Prolonged standing or walking on hard surfaces
  • Improper footwear with poor support
  • Increased body weight or sudden changes in activity level

Signs and Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis

  • Sharp or stabbing pain usually on the inside (medial) of the heel

  • Morning pain upon first steps, easing as you move around

  • Pain returning after long periods of sitting or standing

  • Increased discomfort after activity, rather than during it

  • Tenderness at the bottom of the heel when pressed

  • Footwear Guidance – Recommendations for supportive shoes and insoles to improve shock absorption and comfort.

  • Stretching & Strengthening Programs – Focused exercises for the calves, Achilles tendon, and plantar fascia to improve flexibility and reduce strain.

  • Taping or Padding – Temporary supports to reduce pressure during flare-ups.
