Fungal Toenails (Onychomycosis)

fungal nail

Overview

Fungal toenails happen when fungus gets under the nail and causes it to become thick, discoloured, and brittle. The infection can spread to other nails or skin if it isn’t treated. Fungus grows well in warm, damp places like pools, showers, and boots. Certain factors like reduced blood flow, diabetes, frequent sweating, and poor hygiene can increase your risk of getting fungal toenails. While it’s not usually dangerous, it can be stubborn, uncomfortable, and can spread if left untreated.

Common Signs of Fungal Toenails

  • Nail discolouration – yellow, brown, or white streaks or patches

  • Thickened or brittle nails – nails that crumble, split, or are difficult to cut

  • Nail separating from the underlying skin

  • Bad odour – unpleasant smell due to fungal buildup beneath the nail

Why Treat Fungal Toenails

Fungal toenails don’t clear up on their own. The longer they’re left untreated, the harder they can be to manage. Early treatment means faster results, better nail appearance, and lower risk of the infection spreading.

Treatment Options

  • Reducing nail thickness – carefully thinning the nail to improve comfort and allow treatments to work better

  • Topical antifungal therapy – applying medication directly to the nail to help remove the infection

  • Oral antifungal treatment – we work with your physician to provide oral treatment, which is the gold standard and most effective

  • Nail removal – for persistent or severe infections, part or all of the nail may need to be removed to fully address the issue

  • Hygiene management and education – guidance on preventing reinfection, including foot hygiene and managing excessive sweating
